REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN

The Queen City

Regina ( population of metropolitan area 194,971 as of 2006 ) is the capital city of Saskatchewan. It is also known as the Queen City. "Regina" is the Latin word for queen. The name Regina was chosen in honor of Queen Victoria who was the monarch at the time. Regina became a city in 1903 and turned 100 in 2003.

Regina is located in the heart of Canada's "bread basket". The city is on the prairies about half way between Winnipeg and Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway.

ATTRACTIONS

  • ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE ACADEMY

    All Mounties do their basic training at the Academy 4 km west of the city center The RCMP Heritage Centre traces the history of the force. The beautiful Chapel at the Depot is Regina's oldest building.

     

  • WASCANA CENTRE

    The beautiful man-made park follows the curves of Wascana Lake, which was created as part of a work project for the unemployed in the 1930s. It is the city's main recreation area - equipped with a bandstand, barbecue pits, snack bars, boating facilities, walking and cycling trails, a swimming pool and waterfowl ponds. The waterfowl park is home to Canada geese, ducks, pelicans, swans and other waterfowl.

    Wascana Centre is also the home of the Saskatchewan Science Centre, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts and the University of Regina.

     
  • ROYAL SASKATCHEWAN MUSEUM

    The museum is in the northwest corner of Wascana Park ( College Ave. and Albert St.) You can learn about Saskatchewan's past and present in the Earth Sciences Gallery and Life Sciences Gallery . In the First Nations Gallery you can see a tipi camp and bison kill, and hear about the native traditions. The murals, sculptures, paintings, and other works were created by Sask. native and non-native artists.

     

  • LEGISLATIVE BUILDING (located in Wascana Park)

    On the south side of the lake is the beautiful Legislative Building , built of Manitoba limestone with an impressive domed tower at its center. The building was designed in the shape of a cross with the top of the dome rising to 53 meters from ground level. In total, 34 types of marble were used in the construction of the building - the marble well beneath the dome, the main stairway, walls, floors, baseboards, pillars and columns. The Legislative Building was built between 1908 and 1912. There are guided tours which include the oak-and-marble-panelled Legislative Chamber and six small art galleries.

     

  • MACKENZIE ART GALLERY

    The MacKenzie Art Gallery is a few minutes walk south of the Legislative Building. Here you can see an excellent collection of art by Canadian, American and International artists.

  • REGINA PLAINS MUSEUM

    The Regina Plains Museum is located on the second floor at 1835 Scarth Street. It contains displays on the city's history.

     

  • GOVERNMENT HOUSE

    Government House west of the city center ( 4607 Dewdney Avenue ) was the residence of the lieutenant governors of the Northwest Territories and then Saskatchewan from 1891 to 1945. The elegant mansion was opened in 1891. It has been restored to how it may have looked in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

     

  • SASKATCHEWAN SCIENCE CENTRE

    The Science Centre has many hands-on exhibits, daily live stage shows and demonstrations. It is located inside the former city powerhouse, a landmark on Wascana Lake since 1914. There are three floors of exhibit space . The Kramer Imax Theater is connected to the Science Center.

     

  • SASKATCHEWAN SPORTS HALL OF FAME and MUSEUM

    The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum recognizes sport excellence. You can see memorabilia, artifacts and portraits in this heritage property that was once the old Land Titles Building.

    • Beaver Creek Conservation Area - Beaver Creek contains one of the few uncultivated short-grass prairie sites in Saskatchewan. An interpretive centre and staff provide opportunities for family and friends to discover nature.
    • Meewasin Valley - The Meewasin Valley Trail follows the South Saskatchewan River through the heart of Saskatoon, offering year-round recreation and sightseeing opportunities for everyone.
    • Cranberry Flats Conservation Area - agreat place for a hike and picnic - beautiful views of the river
    • Poplar Bluffs Canoe Launch - is a beautiful area to launch a canoe for a 3 hour paddle to Saskatoon. Along the way look for birds, animals and other natural wonders. You will be amazed at what you see. Pick up an EcoCanoe Tour Guide.
    • Saskatoon Natural Grasslands - is a unique urban park that shelters nearly 200 species of plants and a variety of native birds and animals. The site is also home to over 25 kinds of butterflies.
